Kidnappers who abducted workers from Dangote Cement Company in Okpella, Edo State, have demanded a ₦5 million ransom for one of their captives, Abah James Ogwu.
Last Monday, unidentified gunmen ambushed the company’s staff bus, taking Ogwu and several colleagues hostage. Victor Ogwu, Abah’s son, told PUNCH on Tuesday that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦15 million but lowered the amount to ₦5 million after numerous pleas during phone negotiations with his family.
Victor explained that they have managed to raise ₦2 million through the support of friends, family, and by selling land. Despite informing the kidnappers of the amount raised, they have yet to respond.
Victor expressed frustration over the lack of police intervention and appealed for help from Dangote Company and the police. He said, “My dad, who works in the administrative department, was kidnapped. The kidnappers initially demanded ₦15 million but reduced it to ₦5 million after we explained we couldn’t afford it. We’ve raised ₦2 million so far, but the kidnappers haven’t responded since we informed them. I’ve been seeking funds online because we don’t have enough for the ransom.”
He added, “I’m not sure if the Edo State Police Command is making any efforts for their release, as my mother and I are in Ogun State. We need Dangote Company and the police to step in and help.”
Chidi Nwabuzor, the spokesperson for the Edo Police Command, confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
