25 students from Ajayi Crowther University faced charges of conspiracy, murder, and negligence at the Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan. Out of these, 12 students were discharged on Monday.

The students were arraigned on June 5, accused of committing the offences on May 24 at the university premises. They were alleged to have caused the death of a fellow student, Jefry Akro, through physical assault using planks and electrical wire. Additionally, a university security guard, Femi Oladoye, was charged with negligence for failing to prevent the fatal assault.

Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi discharged the 12 students based on legal advice that found no evidence linking them to the alleged offences. The remaining defendants, including Oladoye, await further legal proceedings. Oladoye was granted bail set at ₦250,000 and is required to provide two sureties.

The case has been adjourned to July 8 for further mention. The charges against the students and the security guard are in violation of Sections 516, 515, and 324 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
