In many countries, people experience distinct seasons like Autumn, Spring, Summer, and Winter. However, in Nigeria, we primarily have two seasons: the dry season, which runs from October to February, and the rainy or wet season, which starts around April and typically ends between October and November.

Taking care of your shoes during the rainy season can be challenging, but with a few simple steps, you can keep them in great condition. Here are some tips to help you maintain your shoes during the wet months:

1.Waterproof Your Shoes

To keep rainwater from soaking your shoes, consider waterproofing them. Rub a small amount of Vaseline or beeswax over the shoes. These oily substances create a barrier that repels water. Follow these steps to waterproof your shoes:

    • Rub Vaseline or wax all over the outer surfaces.
    • Use a blow dryer on medium heat to set the wax and give your shoes a shine.
    • Let them rest for a day. Your waterproof shoes are now ready, protected from water, and shining beautifully.

2.Powder Them

Caring for the insides of your shoes is just as important as the outside. Sprinkle talcum powder on the inner soles to absorb moisture and prevent decay. This simple step can significantly extend the life of your footwear.

3.Wear Rubber Sandals

Rubber sandals have become a fashion staple and are quite affordable. They are perfect for the rainy season, offering both style and practicality. Keep a pair handy for your daily commutes to navigate wet conditions effortlessly.

4.Freeze Them

If your shoes get wet, it’s crucial to dry them thoroughly to extend their lifespan. Start by washing and drying them. Given the frequent lack of sunshine during the rainy season, you might use a washing machine’s drying function. Use a hairdryer and towel to remove excess moisture first. For extra odor protection, place the dry shoes in a double bag and put them in the freezer overnight. This will help kill bacteria that cause bad smells.

5.Rub Alcohol

Alcohol is a fantastic remedy for eliminating shoe odor caused by wetness. Using a cotton bud, apply alcohol inside the shoe, avoiding the outer surface, especially if it’s leather, to prevent damage. Alcohol not only removes odors but also acts as a disinfectant, eradicating bacteria and removing dirt.

By following these tips, you can ensure your shoes stay in top shape, even during Nigeria’s rainy season. Happy walking!
