The Nigerian music industry mourns the loss of highlife maestro, Godwin ‘Kabaka’ Opara, who recently passed away.
Derda Promotions, Kabaka’s record label, confirmed his demise in a statement released on Friday. Ammarachi Anyanwu, the chief operating officer of Derda Promotions, revealed that the talented musician breathed his last on Thursday. However, the cause of his death remains undisclosed.
In their statement, Derda Promotions expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Godwin Kabaka Opara, a revered figure who left an indelible mark on the world of highlife music. Kabaka was celebrated not only for his remarkable talent as a songwriter and guitarist but also for his ability to uplift spirits with his infectious highlife melodies.
His musical journey was extensive, spanning decades, genres, and bands. He co-founded The Oriental Brothers International Band in 1973, a powerhouse in the highlife scene known for its socially conscious lyrics and authentic sound.
In 1976, Kabaka ventured into a solo career, forming The Kabaka International Guitar Band. Throughout his career, he released fourteen albums, producing hits like ‘Mangala Special’ and delving into Ezebongo rhythms, showcasing his versatility.
Kabaka’s legacy continued to thrive with The Imo City Band, and in September 2023, he made a triumphant comeback with the album ‘The Return of Kabaka,’ garnering over a million streams and earning a spot among the top 100 albums worldwide.
His passion for music was contagious, and his unwavering dedication to his craft served as an inspiration to fellow musicians and fans alike. Kabaka’s memory will live on through his timeless music, leaving an enduring imprint on the Nigerian music landscape.
