Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) announced on Friday that employees would be required to work at least three days per week beginning May 1.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, companies were sending employees home to work remotely. Even as lockdowns have been lifted around the world, a sizable number of employees remain remote or in a hybrid environment.

In a message posted on Amazon’s blog, CEO Andy Jassy stated that the decision was made at a meeting earlier this week and that the change would make it easier to learn and collaborate.

“This shift will benefit the thousands of businesses located near our urban headquarters in Puget Sound, Virginia, Nashville, and the dozens of cities around the world where our employees work,” Jassy wrote.

The company added that there would be some exceptions to the rule, such as customer support and salespeople who would be able to work remotely.

Amazon stated in October 2021 that it would allow individual teams to determine how many days corporate employees would be expected to work from home per week.
