Three journalists from one of Egypt’s last independent media outlets will stand trial.

The three women work for Mada Masr, a liberal online newspaper.

They are accused of infringing on the rights of lawmakers from the Nation’s Future party, which strongly supports President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

If convicted, the journalists could face prison sentences of up to two years and hefty fines.

Nation’s Future rejects an article published by the website in August that claimed a state watchdog had accused its MPs of gross financial misconduct.

At least twice before, Egyptian authorities attempted to crack down on Mada Masr.

The newspaper has had difficulty keeping its publishing license.
