Eluned Morgan Takes the Helm as Wales’ First Female Leader
Eluned Morgan has made history by becoming Wales’ first female leader, following her election by lawmakers in the devolved Senedd parliament on Tuesday. Morgan, who steps into the role previously held by Vaughan Gething, brings a fresh perspective to Welsh Labour after Gething’s brief four-month tenure.
At 57, Morgan is already a familiar face in Welsh politics. She was elected Welsh Labour’s leader last month, setting the stage for her appointment as Wales’ first minister. Her nomination was confirmed as the Senedd reconvened from its recess.
Gething’s departure comes after a tumultuous period marked by controversies, including criticism over a substantial donation from a convicted environmental offender and a scandalous leaked phone message leading to a minister’s dismissal. Although Gething was initially determined to stay on despite a no-confidence vote, he ultimately chose to step down.
Morgan, who has been a member of the Senedd since 2016 and served 15 years in the European Parliament, is touted as a “unity candidate” in Welsh Labour’s current climate of division. Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised Morgan’s appointment, highlighting her extensive experience and proven record.
With the Welsh government’s focus on key areas like transport, environment, health, and education, Morgan’s leadership marks a new chapter for Wales, promising a dynamic approach to policy and governance.
