A Kwara State Magistrates Court has limited the August 1-10 hunger protest to Metropolitan Square in Ilorin, Kwara State. This nationwide protest is set to address the tough economic conditions impacting citizens.
Chief Magistrate Jibril Salihu issued the ex parte order after agreeing with Kwara State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ibrahim Sulyman, on the potential for violence if the protest was not restricted.
The order affects several key respondents, including the Director of the State Security Service, the Commissioner of Police for Kwara State, and the Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Magistrate Salihu stated, “Based on the application and supporting affidavit, the following orders are granted:
- An interim injunction restraining the respondents from holding their protest, rallies, or meetings anywhere other than Metropolitan Square/Asa Dam Road, Kwara State, for seven days starting August 1, 2024.
- The 1st-3rd respondents are required to ensure adequate security to protect lives, properties, and government infrastructure against any acts by the 4th-6th respondents during this period.
He also ordered that all court documents related to this case be served to the 4th-6th respondents by posting them at the High Court of Justice.
Further hearings in the case are scheduled for August 14, 2024.
