Tyla Shines Again with Back-to-Back Afrobeats Wins at the 2025 VMAs

South African star Tyla has done it again, taking home the Best Afrobeats award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards for her hit single Push 2 Start.

At just 23, Tyla stood out in a competitive lineup that included Asake, Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, Wizkid, and Moliy, proving once more that her music has carved a special place on the global stage.

While Push 2 Start lost out in the Best Choreography category, this marks her second consecutive win in Best Afrobeats, following her 2024 victory with the viral anthem Water.

Not every African nominee left the night with a trophy—Ayra Starr missed out on Push Performance of the Year, while Burna Boy walked away without a win in Video for Good.

Still, the evening delivered unforgettable moments across the board. Lady Gaga dominated with four wins, including Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration with Bruno Mars for Die With a Smile. Ariana Grande claimed three awards, including the top prize, Video of the Year for Brighter Days Ahead, and had the honor of presenting the Video Vanguard Award to Mariah Carey. Sabrina Carpenter also had her moment, taking home Album of the Year for Short n’ Sweet.

There were also first-time honors: Busta Rhymes received the Rock the Bells Visionary Award, Ricky Martin was celebrated with the Latin Icon Award, and Mariah Carey was honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The 2025 VMAs, held at the UBS Arena in New York and aired on CBS for the first time, blended star power with history-making recognition.

But Tyla’s win has once again sparked debate. The singer has made headlines for her shifting stance on whether she identifies as an Afrobeats artist. Last year, she distanced herself from the genre, highlighting her Amapiano roots, only to later suggest that her sound blends both Afrobeats and Amapiano.

Her comments have drawn mixed reactions, especially from Nigerian fans who feel the Afrobeats spotlight is being redirected away from the very artists who built it into a global force.

Regardless of the controversy, Tyla’s back-to-back VMAs cement her as one of the leading voices in Africa’s global music wave—proof that the continent’s rhythms continue to shape the sound of the world.
