The Ghana Police Service has announced that it has securely lodged an amount of GH¢2.5 million, received from Nana Appiah Mensah, the former CEO of the now-defunct gold trading company Menzgold, into the Bank of Ghana. As per the police, this step was taken based on guidance from the Attorney General and the Minister for Justice. In a statement, the police clarified that the deposit was made in the Police Exhibit account at the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and is under the jurisdiction of the Court.
The police service emphasized that the ultimate decision on the allocation of these funds would be determined by the court, especially considering their involvement in investigating complaints from customers of MenzGold Ghana Company Limited and Brew Marketing Consult Limited against the suspect, Nana Appiah Mensah.
Regarding the ongoing legal proceedings, the police service noted, “We would like to state that the decision on the disbursement of the money would be determined by the court.”
Recently, Nana Appiah Mensah, who was granted bail of GH¢500 million with four sureties, had asserted that Menzgold had reimbursed 5000 of its clients. The company had initially requested complete documentation from its clients to streamline the payment validation process. However, it was later revealed that a significant portion of the submitted claims were inconsistent, resulting in 60 percent of the claims being ineligible for settlement.
Furthermore, the company had proposed that customers with locked funds enroll for a fee of 650 cedis to determine their eligibility for reimbursements.
Nana Appiah Mensah has pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail amounting to GH¢500 million.
