Nigerian songstress and filmmaker, Tiwatope Savage, recently shared an interesting revelation about her journey into music. In a candid interview with MTV Live while promoting her latest movie project, Water and Garri, Tiwa disclosed that she initially pursued music due to a crush she had on a guy who frequently associated with musicians.
Reflecting on her passion for acting, Tiwa revealed that it was her first love before she ventured into music. She recalled her decision to transition to music, saying, “I’ve always wanted to do acting. Acting was one of my first love[s]before music. I got into music because I had a crush on a guy and he was always around musicians so I said ‘yeah, forget acting and just go into music.’”
Water and Garri, produced by Unbound Studios and JM Films, was filmed in Cape Coast, Ghana, and draws its title from Tiwa’s music EP released in 2021. Tiwa not only wrote and performed the film’s original soundtrack but also serves as an executive producer through her company, Everything Savage. In the movie, she portrays a fashion designer with a burgeoning career in the US who returns to Africa to confront past guilt.

Directed by Meji Alabi and written by Comfort Emmanuel, the film features an ensemble cast including Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting, and Jemima Osunde, among others. Tiwa’s involvement in the project extends beyond acting, showcasing her multifaceted talents in the entertainment industry.
Tiwa Savage joins the ranks of successful musicians who have shared unconventional paths to their music careers. Just recently, popular Nigerian rapper Zlatan Ibile revealed his childhood dream of becoming a professional football player for La Liga giants, Barcelona, before stumbling into music following academic challenges.
Zlatan expressed that his initial intention was never to pursue music but found himself drawn to it after a friend played a song he had recorded. His story underscores the diverse backgrounds and unexpected journeys that many musicians embark on before finding their calling in the music industry.
