Kendrick Lamar is unable to leave his residence, quite literally. On Wednesday (Nov. 16), the rapper pleasantly surprised his audience by releasing the video for the Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers song “Rich Spirit,” in which he sings the song’s clever and well-considered lyrics while inside a sparsely furnished house that he never tries to leave because of ongoing torture from the telephone.

“Rich n—a, broke phone (ah)/ Tryna keep the balance, I’m stayin’ strong (ooh)/ Stop playin’ with me ‘fore I turn you to a song (yeah)/ Stop playin’ with me ‘fore I turn you to a song (ooh)/ Ayy, b—h, I’m attractive (ah)/ Can’t f–k with you no more, I’m fastin’, ugh (ooh)/ B—h, I’m attractive (ah, ah, ah, ah)/ Can’t f–k with you no more, I’m fastin’, ugh,” Lamar raps on the chorus of the track.

On May 23, Lamar’s much-awaited album — his follow-up to 2017’s DAMN. The double album, which included the singles “N95,” “Silent Hill,” and “Die Hard,” was a commercial triumph and spent 26 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at number one. The Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart showed that all three of the LP’s singles peaked in the top 5.

Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers is nominated for album of the year and best rap album, and “The Heart Part 5” is up for record and song of the year, best rap performance, best rap song, and best music video. Lamar is presently nominated for eight awards at the 2023 Grammys. The nomination for best melodic rap performance is “Die Hard.”
