The wife of a Kenyan pastor who is due in court on Tuesday for the deaths of his followers has been arrested.
Rhoda Maweu, Paul Nthenge Mackenzie’s wife, was apprehended in the coastal town of Mtwapa on Monday night after being on the run for weeks, according to local media.
She was arrested alongside her aunt, Everlyne Nduku Muema, and is scheduled to appear in court with her husband on Tuesday.
He is accused of leading a doomsday cult and inciting his followers to starve to death.
More than 110 bodies were exhumed from a mass grave discovered in Kilifi’s Shakahola. Post-mortem examinations revealed that some died from starvation, while others died from suffocation and strangulation.
Mr. Mackenzie has denied any wrongdoing but has been refused bail.
Another pastor, Ezekiel Odero, who was arrested in connection with similar deaths in his church in Kilifi county, will be arraigned in court on Tuesday.
