North West saved the day when her mother, Kim Kardashian, had a wardrobe malfunction at the Met Gala. The 42-year-old reality star wore a stunning Schiaparelli gown covered in 50,000 freshwater pearls to the annual fashion event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and thankfully, her 9-year-old daughter, North, was nearby as she walked the red carpet.

Kim spoke with Vogue on the red carpet, sharing her inspiration for the pearl-covered ensemble as well as a minor wardrobe malfunction.

“I desired pearls.” What else is there, Karl? “I always imagined the iconic Chanel pearls, so we wanted to be dripping in pearls,” Kim explained. “Some popped up along the way, and I told my daughter to take them all.” They’re genuine pearls that she was putting in her purse.”

Throughout the evening, Kim’s Schiaparelli creation proved problematic. She was seen walking back to her New York City hotel with strands of pearls ripping off and scattering on the ground, while empty strands hung loose.
Kim’s pearl look has also been compared to her mother, Kris Jenner, who declared, “You’re doing amazing, sweetie,” while snapping her own candid shots of the racy shoot in 2007.

The theme of this year’s Met Gala was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” which celebrated the late designer’s entire body of work and life.

This year’s dress code was “in honor of Karl.” Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Dua Lipa, tennis pro-Roger Federer, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour served as co-chairs for the spring fashion event. The annual gala benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
