Meta announced on Friday that it has lifted restrictions on Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. These measures were originally put in place after his supporters stormed the US Capitol in 2021.
Meta stated that, as the Republican Party’s nominee, Trump will no longer face the heightened suspension penalties previously imposed.
Trump’s social media accounts were suspended indefinitely the day after the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, following his praise of the violent actions on social media.
Although his accounts were reinstated in February 2023, they were under the threat of penalties for any future violations—restrictions that Meta has now removed.
Meta explained in a blog post, “We believe that the American people should be able to hear from the presidential nominees on the same basis,” emphasizing that all users, including presidential candidates, must adhere to Community Standards to prevent hate speech and incitement to violence.
Trump, who is also banned from Twitter and YouTube, now primarily uses his own platform, Truth Social. His Facebook page, with 34 million followers, features posts from Truth Social, rally invitations, and campaign videos.
