Legendary Nigerian Singer Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away at 72
Beloved Nigerian singer, actress, and politician Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72.
Onwenu collapsed after delivering a remarkable performance at Stella Okoli’s birthday party in Lagos on Tuesday. She was swiftly taken to Reddington Hospital but, unfortunately, did not survive.
Muhammed Ahlim, spokesperson for the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), confirmed the news but mentioned that they are still awaiting an official statement from Onwenu’s family. He told Channels Television, “Yes, it’s true. However, we have not yet received an official statement from the family.”
Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Onyeka Onwenu began her musical journey in the 1980s, debuting with the album “For the Love of You” in 1981. Over the years, she released numerous hits, including the popular track “One Love.”
Onwenu’s impact extended beyond music. She made significant contributions to Nollywood, earned numerous awards for her work, and was celebrated as a pioneer in Nigerian music. Her political career included roles such as Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.
In recognition of her contributions, Onwenu was awarded the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

Former Kaduna Senator Shehu Sani and ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri have expressed their sorrow over Onwenu’s passing. Sani praised her as a timeless legend whose music spread love and peace. Omokri remembered her as an “elegant stallion,” noting her charm and influence in music and artistry.
Obaseki Remembers Onwenu’s Legacy
Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki also paid tribute, describing Onwenu as a “gift to her generation.” He praised her versatility and commitment to social issues, highlighting her contributions as a musician, journalist, and social crusader.
Obaseki expressed his condolences to Onwenu’s family, friends, and fans, acknowledging the void left by her passing and the loss to Nigeria’s cultural landscape.
