Nigerian Police to Reallocate Resources for National Security.
In a significant move, Nigerian police authorities have announced their intention to withdraw certain police units from the task of protecting and escorting VIPs. Police chief Olukayode Egbetokun emphasized the importance of realigning priorities, stating, “While the protection of dignitaries remains paramount, it is imperative that we address the pressing security concerns affecting the entire nation.” This strategic shift aims to optimize the deployment of police personnel to effectively combat the prevailing security threats.
According to The Premium Times newspaper, the reassignment of these officers will occur only in cases where it is deemed necessary. This ensures that adequate protection is still provided to dignitaries who require it while allowing for a more robust focus on safeguarding the nation as a whole.
President Bola Tinubu, who assumed office last month, has been taking decisive action to address Nigeria’s security challenges. One of his top priorities is to address the prevalent insecurity that has plagued the country. Earlier this month, President Tinubu made sweeping changes to Nigeria’s defense personnel, appointing new commanders across the army, navy, and air forces.
Under the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari, the country experienced a decline in security, with a notable increase in kidnapping-for-ransom incidents.
