The Sokoto State Government has firmly denied any intentions to remove the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, refuting recent rumors and allegations. Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration emphasized the continued strong and respectful relationship with the Sultanate Council.
On Tuesday, state spokesman Abubakar Bawa condemned the rumors aimed at disrupting the harmony between the government and the Sultanate. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) had claimed there was a plot to dethrone the Sultan, prompting Vice President Kashim Shettima to stress the importance of protecting the Sultan’s esteemed position.
Speaking at the North-West Peace and Security Summit in Katsina State, Vice President Shettima highlighted the significance of the Sultan’s role, urging the Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Idris Gobir, to uphold the institution’s integrity. “The Sultan is more than just the ruler of Sokoto; he is a symbol of unity and tradition that we must all protect and cherish,” Shettima remarked.
The Sokoto State Government’s statement reassured the public that the accusations by MURIC were unfounded. The administration underscored its commitment to the Sultanate, stating that it values and respects the council deeply, as previous administrations have.
“The Sultanate Council holds a place of historical importance and reverence for the people of Sokoto. Our administration maintains a warm and respectful relationship with Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, consulting him regularly on state matters and valuing his guidance,” the statement clarified.
Addressing recent administrative changes involving some District Heads, the government explained that these actions were based on thorough investigations. The affected District Heads were reportedly involved in misconduct, including land racketeering and failing to follow authority. After a fair hearing, a committee provided recommendations, which the government acted upon in the public’s best interest.
The Sokoto State Government continues to work closely with the Sultanate Council, ensuring that their collaborative efforts foster peace and development in the region.
