A Russian airstrike on a gas facility in Ukraine’s eastern Poltava region resulted in one fatality and three injuries, according to the Ukrainian energy ministry on Thursday.
Recent Russian attacks on energy infrastructure have severely disrupted Ukraine’s electricity generation, leading to the importation of supplies and implementation of power outages.
The energy ministry confirmed that Wednesday’s airstrike targeted a facility associated with UkrGasVydobuvannya, the country’s largest gas enterprise.
“Regrettably, the attack claimed the life of a 49-year-old electrician and left three employees wounded. They are receiving necessary medical attention,” the energy ministry stated.
While the Kremlin denies targeting civilian infrastructure, Russia’s defense ministry has acknowledged attacks on energy facilities it claims support Ukrainian military operations.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged allies to increase supplies of air defense systems to counter Russian missile and drone attacks. Zelensky highlighted that systematic Russian assaults on energy installations have significantly reduced Ukraine’s electricity output compared to a year ago.
