The Ghana Police Service has detained Alhaji Collins Dauda, the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South in the Ahafo region, over his alleged involvement in the disturbances that unfolded in Kukuom, Ahafo Region during the ongoing Limited Voter Registration Exercise on Saturday, May 11, 2024.
A statement from the police revealed that one individual sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical attention. Efforts are underway to apprehend other suspects linked to the disturbance.
The Ghana Police Service has also issued a stern warning to the public in light of recent violations observed at Limited Voter Registration Centers nationwide, stressing the importance of abiding by the law during this crucial electoral process.
“We deplore the regrettable incidents witnessed at some registration centers including Cape Coast, Central Region, Kukuom, Ahafo Region, and Adugyama, Ashanti Region,” the Police emphasized in a statement released on Sunday, May 12. “Several arrests have been made as investigations continue.”
Emphasizing the importance of maintaining civility and respect for the electoral process, the Police urged citizens to fulfill their civic duty responsibly. “The registration exercise is a civic responsibility that must be approached with civility,” stressed the Police statement. “We urge the public to exercise restraint and comply with the laws governing the registration process.”
The Police reiterated their firm commitment to upholding the law, stating, “We will not tolerate any breaches of the law, and individuals engaging in such acts will face consequences.”
As the country gears up for the upcoming elections, the Police emphasized the necessity of preserving law and order to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.
