Tinubu spoke about his administration’s efforts to bring about significant changes within the nation’s police force.

He officially designated April 7 as National Police Day during the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations event at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, on Monday night, with Vice President Kashim Shettima representing him.

Tinubu highlighted the importance of reshaping the mindset and culture of police officers as a crucial step in modernizing the force. Since taking office in 2023, his administration has spearheaded various reforms aimed at revitalizing the police.

He emphasized the necessity of providing continuous training and development opportunities to ensure that officers are equipped with the skills needed for contemporary policing challenges.

The Federal Government has also sanctioned the observance of the first week of April as Police Week, culminating in National Police Day on April 7th.

Addressing the officers present, Tinubu emphasized that they are not mere guardians but individuals deserving of respect and empathy.

He acknowledged the citizens’ endurance in the face of security threats, attributing it to the dedication of the police force. Their courage, he stated, reflects the nation’s unity and offers hope for a brighter future.

Tinubu outlined various reforms his administration has undertaken, including investments in training, capacity-building, and upgrading equipment and technology. These measures aim to enhance the operational effectiveness of the force.

He also assured officers of improved welfare both during their service and post-retirement.

Earlier in the event, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for acknowledging the hard work and patriotism of police officers.

Akpabio expressed satisfaction with the recognition of deserving officers, emphasizing the importance of celebrating the unsung heroes within the police force.

He urged for the eradication of misconduct within the force, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with the privilege of serving the nation.
