President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that the La General Hospital project is slated for completion within the next 28 months.

During the 2024 State of the Nation address in Accra, the President announced that the government has secured alternative funding for the project, which has faced controversy, ensuring its completion within the next two years.

“A new funding source has been secured for the reconstruction of the La Hospital Project, transforming it into a fully functional modern hospital equipped with necessary diagnosis and treatment facilities,” stated the President.

He further mentioned, “The Contractor has received an advance mobilization of 15%, amounting to approximately US$7.5 million, and construction has commenced. The project officially began in January this year and is scheduled for completion within 28 months.”

In November 2023, the then Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, announced the government’s acquisition of 50 million Euros in funding to initiate the project.

During a Parliament briefing, Mr. Agyemang-Manu stated, “At the 37th cabinet session, the president instructed the Ministers of Trade and Industry, Health, and Finance to explore alternative funding sources to resume the project. Through their efforts, the Minister of Finance has now identified local funds to resume the project with the same scope but at a revised price of 50 million Euros.”

The Health Minister assured that steps were underway to facilitate contractor payments, with construction set to begin promptly.

Earlier, the Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, highlighted that the hospital’s reconstruction had stagnated due to financial constraints.
