Nigeria Activates National Emergency Operation Centre Amid Rising Cholera Cases

Amid a surge in cholera cases across 31 states, the Federal Government has activated the National Emergency Operation Centre to address the crisis.

Rep. James Faleke (Ikeja Federal Constituency) has urged Nigerians to approach the cholera outbreak with the same seriousness as the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday, Faleke emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and hygiene practices.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) recently reported 53 cholera-related deaths. Dr. Jide Idris, NCDC’s Director-General, announced the activation of the National Emergency Operation Centre, stating, “As of June 24, 2024, 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths were recorded across 31 states and 107 LGAs, with a case fatality rate of 3.5% since the beginning of the year.”

Faleke stressed the importance of cleanliness and caution regarding food and water consumption. “Every Nigerian needs to be careful; our attitude to cleanliness matters,” he said.

He urged the public to treat the cholera outbreak with the same seriousness as COVID-19, noting that cholera has claimed many lives. “We expected that, in this modern age, we should not be having an outbreak of cholera in Nigeria. However, it has come; so, we have to deal with it. People should be more careful with what they eat and drink. There are many fake products out there. Stop taking fake products. You don’t have to drink anything, take clean water,” he advised.

Faleke’s call to action underscores the urgency of combating the cholera outbreak and the need for collective

effort to prevent further spread and fatalities.
