The Russian embassy in Kenya has backed a campaign by local leaders to condemn what they claim is the promotion of LGBT culture.

It comes on the heels of a Supreme Court decision last week that allows the LGBT community in Kenya to register lobbying groups.

Supporters argue that the judges were asserting a right to an association that all citizens have, but opponents, including President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga, charged that the judges were promoting “un-African” values.

Many have incorrectly interpreted the ruling as granting the LGBT community the right to marry in Kenya, which the Russian embassy has sought to exploit.

“Vladimir #Putin: “As long as I’m president, we will have “dad” and “mum,” one of the embassy’s tweets said.

“The West will come for more,” said another. Traditional values must be preserved, or humanity will perish.”
