Sam George, the Member of Parliament representing Ningo-Prampram, recently voiced his support for the contentious anti-LGBTQ bill, describing its passage as a positive development for Ghana. Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, George clarified that his stance is not about individuals’ personal choices but rather the perceived impact on Ghanaian youth. He emphasized the bill’s focus on safeguarding family values and personal privacy.
According to George, when the bill becomes law, any violation would require legal proceedings to prove before a judge. He highlighted its provisions against assault, stating that those who wrongfully assault others could face up to three years in jail. George asserted that the legislation is essential for preserving Ghana’s values.
“I am absolutely not interested in what you do in the privacy of your bedroom. It is not my business,” he reiterated.
George expressed concern about individuals bringing private matters into Ghanaian classrooms, questioning the appropriateness of exposing children to such issues in an educational setting.
“How can I pay fees for my child to go to school, then you go and bring the pervasion of your bedroom into the Ghanaian classrooms?” he queried.
The proposed legislation aims to prohibit LGBTQ+ activities, criminalize promotion or advocacy for such activities, and establish measures for the protection of children and individuals affected by or accused of engaging in LGBTQ+ activities.
