The Senegalese government has canceled a planned rally on Friday to condemn the results of a report that expressed concerns about the handling of the country’s $1.5 billion (£1.3 billion) Covid-19 fund.
The Court of Auditors’ report, released two weeks ago, stated that there were anomalies in how the money was handled.
According to the administration, the documented failures account for less than 1% of the fund.
They stated that they will follow the report’s recommendations, one of which is to investigate officials in the ministries.
While the authorities indicated that the location chosen for the rally was undergoing “major works” in preparation for Independence Day celebrations, followers of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko believe the protest was prohibited because the government was concerned about the impact it would have.
