Senegal President Macky Sall urged police on Wednesday to take all necessary security precautions in the aftermath of deadly protests over the trial of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.

At least one person was killed in clashes between Mr. Sonko’s supporters and police officers.

Protests have taken place across the country in response to Mr. Sonko’s trial on charges of defaming the tourism minister, who is a member of Mr. Sall’s party.

Mr. Sonko, on the other hand, claims that the trial’s true goal is to disqualify him from running for president in next year’s elections.
