A landslide in Kenya’s Kimende area of central Kiambu county has left an unspecified number of villagers feared trapped, following heavy rains on Tuesday night.

The incident, triggered by the rains in the area, particularly in regions with escarpments, resulted in several homes being covered in mudslides, as depicted in photos shared online.

In response, the Kenya Red Cross has cordoned off the affected area and designated it as a danger zone. While there have been no confirmed fatalities, there are reports of several individuals still unaccounted for, according to the aid agency.

Rescue operations are slated to resume on Wednesday, with concerns that the landslide may extend into neighboring areas if the rainfall persists.

The landslide adds to the toll of ongoing heavy rainfall across Kenya, which has resulted in 289 fatalities and displaced over 280,000 individuals in recent weeks.
