Marisa Paredes, a celebrated Spanish actress known for her collaboration with director Pedro Almodóvar, has passed away at the age of 78, according to Spain’s film academy.
Paredes began her acting career at 14 and appeared in over 75 films throughout her life, gaining international fame through her work with Almodóvar. She starred in several of his notable films, including All About My Mother, The Flower of My Secret, and High Heels, earning the nickname “Almodóvar’s girl.”
“Spanish cinema has lost one of its most iconic actresses, Marisa Paredes, who graced the screen over 75 times throughout her remarkable career,” the academy announced on X (formerly Twitter).
While she was well-known in Spain, Paredes gained global recognition after her collaborations with Almodóvar began in 1983 with Dark Habits, solidifying their creative partnership.
Paredes was twice-nominated for Spain’s Goya awards, earning an honorary Goya in 2018. Her international film credits include Life is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni and The Devil’s Backbone by Guillermo del Toro.
She served as president of Spain’s film academy from 2000 to 2003, leaving a lasting impact on the nation’s cinema.
