Despite my best efforts, I am unable to manifest the end of winter or melt snow with my thoughts. But I can divert my attention with springtime shopping, and you can, too, by anticipating the styles of the coming season. We’re taking notes as tastemakers take to the runways and streets. In the meantime, we’ve got you covered with all the hottest winter trends, but the spring thaw is just around the corner, so get ready. We’ve compiled a list of the best handbag styles for spring (not to be confused with our favorite 2023 bag trends).

Big Bags

We like big bags, and we won’t lie about it. Miniatures had their time, but it’s easy to say goodbye to doll-sized purses that can only hold a MetroCard. Handbags on the runways of Luar, Proenza Schouler, Altuzarra, and Tommy Hilfiger ranged from standard totes to Santa Claus-worthy sacks.

You need space for all those odds and ends, whether you commute, use your purse as a diaper bag, or simply like to keep an extra pair of shoes on hand (you never know!). So, this spring, you will have plenty of space.

Metallics

Sequin-related, if you will. Metallic bags from LaQuan Smith and Fendi have the same joyful spirit and fun appearance as sequins, but with a slightly more upscale elegance.

Dress in vibrant colors, a variety of prints, and metallic statement accessories for a show-stopping look, or use the trend to liven up an otherwise simple look.

Wristlets

I didn’t think I missed wristlets or would be thrilled to see them return, but then covetable option after covetable option floated down the Coach runway, and I was sold. Wristlets are a good compromise between clutches and shoulder bags.

If you don’t want the bulk of a large bag but still need to carry more than your cardholder, this is the style for you.

Baguettes

As if baguettes ever go out of style…nevertheless, these oblong bags are as fashionable as ever. Fendi even went so far as to literally inscribe the word “Baguette” on several of their spring/summer 2023 bags. Talk about going all in. But it’s easy to see why the style is so popular.

The versatile shape is ideal for carrying just enough, and the strap can be worn as a shoulder bag or as a top handle. There’s a baguette for everyone, from collectible, high-end designs that double as investments to TikTok favorites and affordable Amazon bags.

Sequins

What could be better than one trend? Two styles merged into one. Fendi’s sequined baguette comes into play. Everyone knows that the early 2000s are back in style, and with it, all of the decade’s gaudiness that we’ll gladly claim as a guilty pleasure.

Sequin-adorned handbags were prominently featured in some of the season’s hottest shows, including those by LaQuan Smith and Christian Siriano. Expect glimmering, shimmering accessories to embrace maximalism this spring.
