Beach resorts in Ghana, ranging from modest lodges to high-end retreats, make the most of this welcoming West African country’s sandy, Atlantic Ocean beaches. Some also provide picturesque views of the Volta River. You’re never far from a sun lounger or a surfboard, whether you’re near the capital of Accra or driving further into the country. The following are the best beach resorts in Ghana.

Busua Beach Resort

This award-winning three-star resort offers 62 chalet-style rooms with balconies or gardens on several acres of sandy beach in Busua, a fishing village three hours from Accra. A children’s pool and playground, tennis courts, two on-site restaurants focusing on local cuisine, and a nightclub are among the amenities. Some suites include private kitchenettes and living rooms. All of this in a region of the country that did not have electricity until the 1990s.

Meet Me There Lodge

This non-profit ecolodge in Dzita, on the coast of the Volta region, raises funds for the charity Dream Big Ghana, which works to improve healthcare access for locals. Compost toilets are available in all rooms for a unique ensuite experience – they’re much better than they sound. Some of the most spacious and quiet suites, with windows that open onto decking and the pool, feel decidedly indulgent, as does the spa, with views of the waves from your treatment bed and an appealing craft cocktail bar. On Sundays, you can hear the ocean and joyful noise from the nearby church.

The Royal Senchi

Stay at this spacious four-star luxury resort in Akosombo, Ghana’s Eastern Region. It has 80 rooms and suites spread across 35 acres (14ha) of lush greenery, with atmospheric views of Ghana’s main river, the Volta, from many of the rooms’ terraces and balconies. There is room service 24 hours a day, a spa and salon, a swimming pool, gym, tennis courts, and a playground. The nearby Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary is one of the day trips worth taking if you venture out.

Bojo Beach Resort

This fun private beach resort in Bortianor, 12 miles (19 kilometers) from Accra, offers a variety of 35 rooms and suites, all outfitted to a high standard. If you don’t fancy the resort’s stretch of private beach, there’s an appealing outdoor pool, and the hotel also takes advantage of its proximity to the Densu River Delta with canoeing experiences. It’s convenient for those who need to be near Accra but don’t want to drive for hours to a resort.

Lou Moon Resort

This 24-acre (9.7ha) resort is located in the small village of Agyan, in Ghana’s Western Region, on the private beach of an exceptionally photogenic bay. Lou Moon’s “village” of buildings is overseen by Belgian designer Paul Ramlot and consists of low-slung, thatched cottages that blend in with the landscape. There are well-equipped family villas with pools available for accommodation. If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, try to book one of the two villas with a clifftop infinity pool.

Lemon Beach Resort

Lemon Beach Resort, located near Elmina, is popular for its delivery of drinks to your sunbed at the touch of a button. The resort’s beach is only safe for low-tide swimming, but that matters less than you might think, thanks to some other nearby Atlantic Ocean swimming options. There are also tours and activities planned, such as atmospheric bonfire nights on the beach. Take advantage of the opportunity to visit a local school and donate supplies as well.

Coconut Grove Hotel

This all-inclusive luxury beach resort in Elmina, a town with a historic castle and fort, has hosted everyone from Will Smith to the UN Secretary-General. Local fabrics add a personal touch to otherwise anonymous suites. Coconut Grove Hotel’s amenities include an 18-hole golf course, a gym, tennis, and basketball courts, and, unusually for a luxury hotel, an on-site animal sanctuary. Don’t forget about the stunning beach.

Aqua Safari Resort

Aqua Safari Resort in Ghana’s capital of Accra has a wow factor, with a direct lakeside setting, grand entrance hall, and high-ceilinged event spaces. The activities menu is diverse, but as the name and location suggest, watersports, including jet-ski riding, are central to this resort’s appeal. The rooms and chalets have been appointed to a high standard throughout, and it’s well worth spending a day or two relaxing by the outdoor pools.

Escape3points Ecolodge

This authentic, beautifully simple accommodation option is made up of hand-built lodges made of natural materials, located just outside of the village of Cape Three Points in Ghana’s Western Region. The rainforest greenery and organic produce gardens are here, but the real draw of Escape is its location on a long stretch of golden, sandy beach. Beachgoers enjoy activities ranging from whale watching to volleyball, and the strong surfing breaks in certain areas are a big draw for intermediate and experienced surfers.
