Tunisian President Kais Saied has issued a decree extending the country’s state of emergency, which has been in effect since November 2015.

The state of emergency has been extended until the end of December this year, according to the state news agency TAP.

Mr. Saied last extended the state of emergency for a month on December 30.

It had previously been extended for nearly a year, from February to December 31, 2022.

The initial declaration of a state of emergency in November 2015 followed a bombing that killed 12 people on a bus carrying presidential guard forces.

Earlier that year, the country had been rocked by two major attacks on foreign tourists in the capital Tunis and the resort town of Sousse.

The latest move comes as Tunisia’s main opposition parties accuse Mr. Saied of attempting to consolidate power by enacting a series of measures aimed at expanding his powers while limiting those of elected institutions.

After a record-low voter turnout in recent parliamentary elections, opposition leaders have called on the president to step down.
