Reports from local media indicate that the Catholic Church in Uganda is grappling with a significant shortage of altar wine.
This scarcity, ongoing since February, is reportedly linked to the conflict in Gaza, which has disrupted imports.
JW InterServices, the church’s supplier, recently notified dioceses about the issue, advising them to use their existing stock judiciously.
Typically sourced from Spain, the wine travels through the Mediterranean and Red Sea. However, recent changes in shipping routes have caused delays. A shipment expected in early April is now anticipated by month-end due to vessels being rerouted for safer passage through the Atlantic and Indian Ocean.
Father Asiku Alfred Tulu, managing director of JW InterServices, highlighted the impact of these delays, stating, “The ships have been diverted to take longer and safer routes through the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean which has caused a major crisis and delays of their arrival to Mombasa port.”
