Following the recently concluded general elections, the US congratulated Bola Tinubu, the president-elect of Nigeria, and the country’s people.
“This competitive election represents a new period for Nigerian politics and democracy,” US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.
However, the State Department acknowledged that some Nigerians and political parties were upset with the way the elections were handled because of technical issues that stoked allegations of fraud.
Before the 11 March gubernatorial elections, it urged the electoral body to make progress on the issues raised, stating that Nigerians had a right to expect them to perform better.
Additionally, the US urged all parties to steer clear of “violence or inflammatory rhetoric at this crucial time” and attempt to settle any differences through the legal system.
With 37% of the vote, Mr. Tinubu, 70, was declared the winner of the election on February 25 on Wednesday, but the opposition parties have challenged the results.
Peter Obi, the third-place finisher for the Labour Party in the presidential race, has vowed to sue to overturn the results.
