A Senegalese court will soon issue a verdict in the rape trial of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.

Dakar, the capital, is bracing for possible bloodshed.

According to the politician’s supporters, the case is intended to prevent Mr Sonko from running in the presidential elections next year.

He has constantly denied any wrongdoing and asked the public to “rise up.”

When Mr Sonko was apprehended in 2021, at least a dozen people were killed in violence.

He has accused Senegal’s president, Macky Sall, of planning an unlawful third term in office.
