According to an inquest, a mother died after inhaling lighter fluid, leaving her infant to die of dehydration.

Harry, a 14-month-old boy, and Natalie Kane, 27, were discovered dead on December 30 at their Whitehaven residence.

The boy was “left alone and unable to fend for himself,” according to assistant Cumbria coroner Margaret Taylor, and died as a result.

It had been a “tragedy of unimaginable proportions” and was “very distressing,” she said.

The deaths, according to Ms. Kane’s family, were “utterly heartbreaking.”

Following a period of drug addiction and depression after leaving the Army, Ms. Kane’s brother, Shane Evitts, said in a statement read aloud to the inquest that the birth of her son in 2020 had transformed her.
