According to the president, certain Zimbabwean officials who drive taxpayer-funded cars deflate their own tires to get a better deal on the cars.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa recently said at the annual meeting of Zimbabwe’s government procurement transparency committee, “My top executives granted government vehicles park them and deflate the tyres, and utilize the pool car to wait for time to expire so that they can get the vehicle quite new.”
He took a breath between each line to allow the audience to chuckle, according to a report in the Times newspaper.
He said, “If the employees see that the boss’s car has a flat tire, they go and fix the wheel, while the boss secretly deflates another.” He uses a pool car in the meantime since he knows he will be able to purchase it in perfect condition and at book value after three, four, or five years.
