21-Year-Old Man Arrested for Alleged Rape and Murder of 16-Year-Old Girl in Nigeria
A 21-year-old man named Augustine Akor is currently in the custody of Nigeria’s Enugu State Police Command, facing charges of rape and murder. The victim, a 16-year-old girl believed to be his relative, tragically lost her life.
The incident unfolded on Monday, June 12, 2023, when Akor allegedly laid an ambush for the now-deceased girl, Faith Akuji. It is reported that Faith’s grandfather had sent her to grind cassava at the community center. With the assistance of the neighborhood security watch, law enforcement officers apprehended Akor in the Igbo-Eze North Division of the command.
Confirming the arrest, Enugu Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Daniel Ndukwe, stated that the suspect raped the victim on Thursday, June 8. In an attempt to cover up the crime, he strangled her in a bush at Mpole-Ubere in the Ette community, causing her untimely demise.
On the evening of June 8, Faith had gone missing after leaving on her grandfather’s errand, and despite intensive search efforts, she could not be located. Tragically, her decomposing body was eventually discovered in the bush after the suspect’s arrest. Akor confessed to forcefully having sexual intercourse with the victim until she fainted and died during the process. The victim’s lower body clothes were found missing.
Medical professionals at a nearby hospital later confirmed Faith’s death upon her arrival. The Enugu State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department’s Homicide Section is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. Augustine Akor is expected to be arraigned once the investigation is completed.
