The Ghana Police Service has apprehended 46 additional suspects in connection with the recent attacks on the Bepong Chief’s palace and police officers in Kwahu Bepong, Eastern Region. This follows the earlier arrest of 25 individuals, bringing the total number of detainees to 71.
According to a statement released by ACP Grace Ansah-AkrofiI, Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service, the suspects, along with others who remain at large, assaulted the Bepong Chief’s Palace on February 4, 2024. This resulted in injuries to seven people, including five police officers, and significant damage to police vehicles, motorbikes, and private cars. The attackers also caused harm to sections of the palace and a nearby structure.
Following initial investigations and screening, 40 of the detained individuals, identified as having participated in the attacks based on available evidence, are being held to aid further inquiries.
The incident occurred when police officers responded to a call on February 4 to take custody of a murder suspect, Kwasi Nyarko, apprehended by community members. The community, including those already in police custody, sought to take justice into their own hands upon learning of Nyarko’s arrest. When police intervened to prevent the lynching of the suspect, they were met with violence, including stone-throwing and other aggressive acts.
All suspects will be presented before the court to face legal proceedings.
