Imo PDP Leadership Crisis Deepens as Members Challenge State Congress in Court

Tensions within the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have escalated, with 83 members taking legal action against the state chairman, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and others over the conduct of the party’s last congress.

The plaintiffs, led by Lambert Eze, claim that the August 31, 2024, congress—which produced Nwachukwu and other executives—was flawed by “exclusion and illegality.” They allege that the process breached both the Electoral Act 2022 and the PDP constitution, particularly by shutting out duly elected delegates from Ideato North and South Local Government Areas.

In their suit, the aggrieved members are asking the court to nullify the congress, bar the current executives from acting in their positions, and order a fresh election that includes all qualified delegates.

Also named in the case are the PDP national leadership and 10 other individuals, including the party’s caretaker chairmen in Ideato North and South, Hon. Chris Ozoemenam and Hon. Dr. Sylvester Durukwuaku.

Filed under case number FHC/OW/CS/51/2025 at the Federal High Court in Owerri, the matter is being handled by their counsel, K.U. Alisigwe of Ononaku Chambers.

The plaintiffs maintain that the congress was “unlawful, null, and void,” urging the court to intervene and “restore the integrity of internal democracy” within the Imo PDP.
