In south-west Nigeria, a bus collided with another vehicle and caught fire, killing at least 20 passengers, according to police and an official.
The latest traffic catastrophe in the huge west African nation of 210 million people occurred on Friday in Lanlate in the Ibarapa region of Oyo state.
“It resulted in fatalities. Gbenga Obalowo, the chair of the Ibarapa district, stated, “We counted more than 20 fully burned human bodies.
The two vehicles, which were both carrying passengers, collided head-on and caught fire, causing irreparable damage, according to him.
He said that two survivors of the collision who had “serious burns” had been transported to the hospital.
A senior police officer in the state verified the collision and stated without providing any information that “20 people lost their lives in the accident.”
Obalowo quoted speeding and careless driving as the causes of the collision.
Nigeria’s badly maintained roads have frequent accidents, which are mostly caused by speeding and disrespect for traffic laws.
In Kaduna state, northwest Nigeria, three vehicles crashed in July, causing 30 persons to be burned to death.
According to statistics from the road safety commission, there were 10,637 traffic incidents in Nigeria last year, resulting in 5,101 fatalities and more than 30,000 injuries.
