At a school for the blind in Uganda, parents are grieving the loss of their children who perished in the fire. After a dormitory fire broke out early on Tuesday, eleven people died.
The mother of the deceased 6-year-old girl, Jennifer Nassozi, stated, “I cannot convey the grief in my heart right now.
Investigations are ongoing to determine what started the fire at the school in Mukono, which is east of Kampala, the capital; nevertheless, such occurrences are not unusual.
In 2008, Buddo Junior School had one of the worst school fires in the nation. Nineteen kids passed away. The affected dormitory at the Salama School for the Blind is estimated to have had at least 27 youngsters sleeping inside.
Joyce Kaduchu, the minister of education, has also visited the school and spoken with the parents there.
We’re all terribly devastated, she said. “Regardless of one’s physical limitations, everyone has the opportunity to pursue an education in our system. 11 of our children have passed away in very tragic situations.” She stated that in order to identify the children, DNA testing would need to be run on their bodies.
Children lighting candles in their dorm rooms after lights out and leaving them burning in the past has resulted in school fires. Because of overpopulation and a shortage of firefighting supplies at the schools, rescue efforts have sometimes been impeded.
According to a police report from March of this year, there were at least 18 fire occurrences in schools over the course of three months.
