An Abuja-based school, Brickhall School, has temporarily closed its doors following the unfortunate demise of a four-year-old pupil, Miguel Ovoke, who tragically lost his life under distressing circumstances last week. Reports from Excel Specialist Hospital, where Miguel was rushed after choking on a piece of meat during a school meal, revealed the severity of his condition upon arrival.

Despite immediate efforts by the school nurse to save him, Miguel’s condition remained critical upon reaching the hospital. The medical report, signed by Dr. Akinwande Ajayi on behalf of the hospital’s medical director, detailed Miguel’s nonreactive pupils, undetectable blood pressure, and lack of cardiopulmonary activity. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, Miguel was pronounced “Brought in Dead.”

In a heartfelt statement issued by the school management and the Parents Teacher’s Forum on Wednesday, condolences were extended to Miguel’s family, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic incident.

“We are devastated to report that Miguel tragically passed away on April 24, 2024, after choking on a piece of meat from his meal brought from home, despite the immediate and expert care provided by our dedicated staff and certified school nurse,” the statement conveyed.

In honor of Miguel and to allow time for mourning, Brickhall School has decided to suspend activities for a week.

The school emphasized the importance of respecting Miguel’s memory and urged all affected by the tragedy to cooperate with medical professionals and law enforcement agencies in their investigation, including an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.
