The Kennedy Center announced on Tuesday that Adam Sandler will receive the 24th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. According to the Kennedy Center, the award honors “individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist” Mark Twain, after whom the award is named.

“Adam Sandler has entertained audiences for more than three decades through his films, music, and tenure as a fan favorite cast member on Saturday Night Live,” said Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter.

“Adam has created characters that have made us laugh, cry, and cry from laughter,” Rutter continues.

He made his film debut in the late 1980s and has since appeared in comedic hits such as “Billy Madison,” “Grown Ups,” and “Big Daddy,” as well as more dramatic roles in films such as “Uncut Gems” and “Punch-Drunk Love.” According to the Kennedy Center, his films have grossed more than $3 billion worldwide.

Sandler first appeared on television as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” in 1990, and then joined the cast the following year. Throughout his five-season run, Sandler would frequently perform comedic musical numbers, such as “The Chanukah Song.” Sandler will host the renowned sketch show again in 2019.

Sandler has achieved success as a musician, producer, and director in addition to his acting roles.

Previous recipients of the Mark Twain award include, among others, Richard Pryor, Lily Tomlin, Lorne Michaels, Ellen DeGeneres, and Eddie Murphy. Jon Stewart was recently presented with the 2022 award.

“We are excited to celebrate [Sandler’s] career at a ceremony that will undoubtedly bring together the best in comedy and provide all the laughs,” Rutter said.

Sandler will be honored on March 19, 2023, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
