A UN resolution rejecting Moscow’s disputed referendums in four Ukrainian regions that it deemed to be a part of Russia received support from 26 African nations.

19 nations, including Eritrea, who had previously voted to oppose a UN resolution denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, chose to abstain.

South Africa, Sudan, Uganda, Mali, the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Congo-Brazzaville, Zimbabwe, and Sudan did not participate.

During the voting, the UN General Assembly was not in session with Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Sao Tome.

Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba traveled to Africa to encourage leaders to back Kyiv and to oppose Russia’s apparent grasp on the region.

He shortened his stay after Russia increased its shelling on Ukraine.
