Women in Africa must be given equal access to all aspects of life, including leadership positions, according to US Vice President Kamala Harris.
“It is critical to maximizing global growth and opportunity,” she told students in Accra, Ghana’s capital, promising that the US will work closely with its partners to close the gender gap.
The United States’ first female vice president is on a three-nation tour of Africa. On Tuesday, she praised Africa’s ingenuity and creativity while emphasizing the importance of addressing challenges such as security, economic growth barriers, and the impact of climate change.

She has already announced $100 million (£81 million) in funding to combat violent extremism. The US will also invest in internet infrastructure to promote economic growth on the continent, she said.
“Let us dream with ambition and lead with conviction,” the politician told Accra’s youth.
Ms Harris will travel to Zambia after Ghana and Tanzania to attend a democracy summit. The US government says it will continue to work with democratic governments on the continent to meet Africans’ aspirations.
