Renowned Ghanaian economist Kwame Pianim criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Ken Ofori-Atta as a Senior Presidential Adviser and Special Envoy for International Trade, stating that it has diminished the goodwill generated by the recent ministerial reshuffle.
In an interview with Joy News in Accra, Pianim expressed his discontent, asserting that Ofori-Atta, as the architect of Ghana’s current economic challenges, is unsuitable for the role. He cited issues such as the country’s financial crisis and inability to meet its financial obligations until 2025, along with being barred from the Eurobond market during Ofori-Atta’s tenure as Finance Minister.
Pianim questioned the wisdom of appointing Ofori-Atta as an envoy given Ghana’s economic predicament, suggesting that the international community would not be easily swayed. He called for a reduction in the number of individuals serving in the Presidency, criticizing the trend of former ministers assuming advisory roles after leaving office.
Additionally, Pianim expressed disappointment over Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s resignation from his position as Majority Leader in Parliament.
Ofori-Atta was relieved of his duties as Finance Minister on February 14 and succeeded by Mohammed Amin Adam. The subsequent announcement by Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare on February 15 outlined Ofori-Atta’s new role.
