Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority Issues Alert on Romance Scams
Ghana’s cyber security authority has recently issued a warning regarding the rising prevalence of romance scams within the country.
The perpetrators of these scams employ various tactics, including creating fake profiles on social media platforms, particularly dating apps, and sending unsolicited emails to establish intimate connections with their targets.
According to experts, fraudsters conduct thorough research on their victims by analyzing their social media activities. Once they establish trust, they exploit the victims by deceiving them into providing money, property, or investments.
Exploiting the vulnerabilities of individuals, such as their feelings of loneliness or insecurity, scammers strive to avoid meeting their victims in person.
In response, authorities are urging the public to refrain from offering financial assistance to individuals they have only encountered online. Additionally, they should avoid sharing personal information or explicit photographs with individuals they have not met face-to-face.
In a recent high-profile case, Ghanaian musician and influencer Mona Montrage, also known as Hajia4Real, was arrested in the UK and subsequently extradited to the US to face trial for alleged romance fraud. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
