Nana Akomea, the Director of Communications for the Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Campaign Team, has highlighted the advantages of having Vice President Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer. Akomea underlined that selecting Dr. Bawumia for this role would strategically weaken the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the northern regions, offering a fresh perspective for the NPP beyond its historical ‘Akan Party’ label.
Addressing the issue, Akomea stated, “Throughout various elections, the NPP has faced a particular branding from our opponents—a narrative that persists. This narrative claims that the NPP is exclusively an ‘Akan Party’ and that non-Akans cannot hold leadership positions. By presenting Dr. Bawumia as our candidate, we have a significant opportunity to counteract this branding.”
Akomea emphasized the inclusive branding that Dr. Bawumia represents, offering a counterpoint to the NDC’s propaganda. “We possess the means to transform that narrative, and that means is Dr. Bawumia,” Akomea reiterated.
Continuing, Akomea pointed out that Dr. Bawumia has successfully bolstered the NPP’s electoral support in northern regions, particularly in the North-East Region where he hails from. He affirmed, “His impact on our electoral strength up north has been remarkable. His influence has elevated our votes, particularly in areas where we previously struggled.”
In an interview with Joy News, Akomea expressed confidence that nominating Dr. Bawumia as the presidential candidate would further diminish the NDC’s stronghold in the Northern Region, historically a key base for the opposition party.
As the competition for the NPP’s flagbearer position unfolds, Dr. Bawumia, hailing from Walewale in the North-East Region, contends with nine other candidates for the coveted slot.
