Billboard Names the 25 Greatest Female Rappers of All Time: Nicki Minaj Takes the Crown

Billboard recently unveiled its highly anticipated list of the 25 Greatest Female Rappers of All Time, shining a spotlight on iconic women who have left a significant mark on hip hop over the decades.

The list spans generations, featuring female MCs who’ve shaped the genre from the early days of hip hop to today’s chart-toppers. Among the celebrated artists is the rising star Doechii, who made the list at number 24, despite breaking into the mainstream less than a year ago. The Grammy-winning artist’s inclusion proves her rapid ascent in the industry.

The 2020s saw the rise of new talents like Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, and Glorilla, whose influence has been undeniable. Megan Thee Stallion, in particular, has made waves with her powerful presence, securing a spot on the list as one of the most influential female rappers of the last decade.

While Cardi B was on the verge of cracking the top 10, she earned the number 11 spot, a well-deserved recognition for her album Invasion of Privacy, which is widely regarded as one of the most iconic rap albums in recent history. Despite her controversies, Cardi B has undeniably reshaped the landscape of modern hip hop.

Also making the list were legendary lyricists Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott, ranked at numbers 3 and 2, respectively. Hill’s groundbreaking album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill earned her a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1999, but some fans were vocal in their belief that Hill deserved the top spot.

Topping the list, of course, is the one and only Nicki Minaj, often referred to as The Queen of rap. Nicki Minaj’s reign in the rap world has spanned nearly two decades, redefining what it means to be a female rapper in a male-dominated industry. Known for her ever-evolving rap personas, Minaj has enjoyed commercial success and cultural impact, setting records and breaking barriers along the way.

Billboard highlights that Minaj became the first female rapper to achieve over 100 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2018, with 149 entries to her name. Her remarkable career has been marked by chart-topping singles, unforgettable guest verses, and iconic performances. From her signature feuds to her undeniable stage presence, Nicki Minaj’s influence remains unmatched, earning her the title of the greatest female rapper of all time.
